n00b needs help

i appologize for being so vastly undereducated about rooting, but can someone please give me a detailed set of instructions on what needs to be wiped on a thunderbolt when rooting, and how to do it. i was reading the thread on how to flash roms, very simple and well explained, except for the part about wiping caches. where are they? how do i wipe without clearing important data? any help would be appreciated.

well first you have to root ofcourse. there are apps you can download that backup all of your apps and phone settings and data. TiBackup. rom manager allows you to dl roms, make backups of your current rom, and it can flash a recovery for you (clockwork i suggest).
