a couple things I wanted to do were freeze bloatware, easily take screen images and try a rom.
I'd tried a launcher but was not smart enough to figure out how to use its many functions. I found it confusing and not at all intuitive.
liberty 2.0 seems just the opposite. while I certainly do not know it well, I've been able to change the look and feel of the phone through the liberty toolbox.
the short answer, I guess is, what do you want to do? answer that, and then read about the various roms. also look in the market for apps that require root and see if they do things you're interested in doing.
rooted, on liberty 2.0
droid x on liberty gingerbread v0.5, slightly oc'd

So what is the best rom for the Droid x. And what apps do I have to have to run a rom?

I'm not sure what all is out there for the DX, but I know Liberty is available for it.
You should browse the DX forums and DX ROMs sub-forums and see what's available. Different ROMs will have different features and advantages. You're also likely to find specific instructions there for installing a ROM.
And as a disclaimer, switching ROMs is not for everyone. Do a little research before you try a new ROM or anything that could harm your phone if you mess up.
