Could use some help

So I'm pretty new to droid and VERY new to rooting and ROMS and pretty much everything related to rooting and ROMS. So I was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions for me.
I was told to start small. So I picked up LauncherPro and have been playing with it for the past few days. I want to get deeper into this side of the Android world but am still a bit fuzzy on the details, reasons, and possibilities.
What are the benefits of rooting my Droid X? Why root??
What are ROMS and what exactly can they change on my device?
Can ROMS only be used on a rooted device?
Flash??

I tried searching for some of this but everytime I find something there are two or three things in refference to what I am looking for that makes no sense.

some of the main benefits are as follows:

Ability to do a full backup of your system

ability to increase performance of your phone through overclocking & memory management

customization through different custom themes

wifi & bluetooth tethering

I am sure there are others that some of the more seasoned posters can add.

Just take into consideration that all the links husker gave are not _really_ Droid X specific. With the Droid X things are quite a bit different.

EDIT: They are a good guidline as to the overall picture, though.
