    Jellybean update fails during install...

So I mentioned this in the other thread, but since I'm not rooted and really shouldn't have this issue, I assume I won't be the only one who does.

Basically it downloads fine, then reboots, I see Andy doing his update thing, then about 1/3 of the way he falls onto his back and a red triangle appears. Phone starts normally and I get a message saying "Update Failed." I've re-enabled all bloat. I used to be rooted until the last maintenance OTA which broke root and I decided to leave it unrooted till JB, so something like this wouldn't happen. Look how that turned out...

Any help? I really wanna try this!!!

I'm looking everywhere and finding absolutely no definitive answers. It looks like even a FDR won't fix it. Closest solution I found on Android central, that I'm getting ready to try, is...

"I had that same problem - because I updated apps in the system because I was rooted. I had to reflash the old OS, root the phone, preserve the root, and allow the system to do two updates - the incremental one that came out a couple weeks ago, and then JB. It's a pain, but it's the only way to get to JB."

Shame I don't know much about "reflashing the old OS." Good thing I'm off today...

Your problems are that there are still some remaining root files that are making it fail. The best way to get your update is to use odin and go back to stock (fully). Using an unroot tool does not do the trick in all cases. The problem is that unrooting does not always clear the baseband and when it gets to that point the update is a failure.

I promise you if you get the correct Samsung drivers and Odin 3.7 and a stock image and flash it then you will certainly be able to obtain the update of JB.

Awesome, going through that process right now. Is it possible to do this without erasing all your storage/data?

Edit: Also, should it take 30 minutes for the stock image to download?

Good to know. And you kept root throughout?

Of course now my drivers are acting all weird and I can't even get it to connect to the computer. Kies is taking FOREVER to open and...it's just a mess. Slowly but surely.

Turns out you do NOT have to flash back to stock ICS to get past this obstacle.

I successfully upgraded my phone using ODIN to flash the Jelly Bean stock image, as per these instructions:
[GUIDE] Jelly Bean Factory Image (Root/Recovery/Unlocked Bootloader) *UPDATED 12/12* - xda-developers

If you use the NO WIPE rom, it will leave all of your data intact. You will however lose root.

The guide also walks you throw flashing another rom to regain root. I have not tried it, but by the looks of it the method has been proven to work.

Brendon you are the man. Thanks for the link.

Decided to just flash it, and am now rooted and ready to go no problem.
