    Turning off Backup Assistant?

Noob to posting -- longtime lurker...
Pretty wowed by my new S3, but wondering if there's a way to turn off that pesky Backup Assistant without rooting? Tried to disable in App Manager, but that option is greyed out. Did a search here, and it suggested removing updates first, but haven't had any to remove
I've changed the internal app settings so that all possible categories to back up are unchecked, I've told middle of the night, wi-fi only, and I've still caught it trying to back up everything via mobile data during the day.
    Thanks!

Good luck, another bloat app by Verizon that you can't touch, there is even a sticker advertising back up assistant PLUS on the charging micro USB cord that came with the phone, good old bent over assistant plus, LOL.

Never activate is the only way. Don't give a pin when you first set up the phone.
I have forgotten more about technology, than most people will ever know in their lifetime.

What is the purpose of this app anyways. Is there any reason not to not activate it in the first place. is there any risk?

I activated it, it backs up anything you have to Verizon server, from contacts to pictures, you choose what you want to back up, I choose my contacts, they give you 500 MB free space.

Just don't activate it when setting up the device. If you configure your phone properly, all your contacts are backed up on Google's side (through Gmail/Contacts).

If you ever want to leave Verizon.....why leave all your contacts behind with them....take them with you with Google/Gmail.

Don't activate, freeze it with Titanium Backup....done.

Do a factory reset and do not activate the verison backup assistant (uncheck) . Use Google account to backup everything.

Before you factory reset back up everything.

You can export your contacts from Verizon and import the .CVS file into Google.

What do you mean by "freeze it with Titanium Backup"?

I'm going to have to do a factory reset b/c I can't stand this damned backup assistant. UGH and GRR. So, before I do the reset I'll need to backup what I can -- thing is I've never done that before. Do you have any advice as to the best steps/things I should do to backup everything before the factory reset? I've never really done any type of backing up on my own so I want to make sure I do the best I can before the reset.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the good answers, even if they weren't what I wanted to hear (do factory reset - aaaargh).
I wasn't acually the one who activated it in the first place. The nice folks at my local porvider's office thought they were doing me a favor by importing my contacts, etc., when they activated the phone......they didn't know I didn't use the service...
Knew y'all would know what to do!
