N.O.V.A 3 takes 2Gb of the 11Gb I have free on my 16Gb SGS3 Blue. Nav Free World another 1.5Gb. Real Racing 2 just over 1Gb.
So, 40%+ of my App space with just 3 apps!
I hope Samsung/Google/whomever sorts this app-to-micro-SD-card issue out, before I run out of space ......
Rooted the device and used Directory Bind
How to move applications & games data to external SD card?
Easy and it works to free space on the internal sd

So if you could find the app outside of the Google play store, would you be able to store it on the external sd. Amazon marketplace for instance. Obviously not all apps are available from amazon, but a number of the free ones are. Would this be a viable workaround?
Listen guys, the problem is NOT with Samsung. It is part of the new structure of the ICS operating system and is set up that way on many newer phones. As a HEAVY gamer, I was furious when I found out about it in September of last year when I bought my new Droid Bionic and could not load even half of my games on it (especially Gameloft games which typically have HUGE data folders).
After yelling and screaming at BOTH Verizon and Motorola about it for months I finally found a couple of apps that a few super smart developers created that fixes it but you must be rooted in order to use them (research "rooting your Android phone" if you don't know what rooting is). The best app for this is "Directory Bind" which I have been using for months now on both my old Bionic AND on my Galaxy S3! I have several topics out here in the forums on this, but I assure you that it is the way to go for putting 20-30GB+ of game data on your EXTERNAL sdcard and not be restricted by your internal sdcard. I believe it was Google who came up with this partitioned structure of the new OS after Gingerbread and I agree that it doesn't seem to make much sense to have 2 areas both called "sdcard" but what can you do?...
I strongly suggest doing your research, root your phone, and then use Directory Bind to store all the game data you want and put it all on the external card.
Good Luck.
No. Regardless of where they come from, all apps will install to the internal memory unless you're rooted and using something like Directory Bind like Batman8 and others mentioned.
And Batman8 is entirely correct. This is the direction that Android is moving in. Motorola was doing it on Gingerbread, and I've yet to see an ICS device that natively allows the installation of apps to the SD card. This was a choice made by Google for a variety of reasons (with stability being one of the major ones). Luckily, for those who need the expandable storage for applications, there are ways to work around it if you're rooted.

The manufacturers (at least Samsung is with the SGS3) are getting an extra benefit of selling two models and making some pretty good cabbage on the one with more storage space. When i bought mine, I asked the Verizon rep about SD storage and she said it could hold up to a 64 GB card. I said "hmm..wonder why anyone would buy the 32 GB version". She either knew and didn't say, or didn't know about this. I'm really not sure which is worse. Had i known, i would have spent the extra for the 32 GB version.
That might be my reason to root and flash CM10 (they fixed this).
