Best and easiest program to use for DVD's and MKV files (or any file for that matter), is DVD Catalyst...hands down. The developer of that program...Mitch, is a good friend of mine. We talk daily about how to push the limits of the movie quality on the Nexus. I have hundreds of movies converted for the OG Droid, HTC Thunderbolt, iPhone 4 and now converting my whole library for the Galaxy Nexus. All my movies are 720p HD MKV's that are converted. You can do 1080p...but that would be overkill.

You could always use handbrake as a great free alternative. I've always used it for conversions and haven't had much issues. You definitely don't want to go over 1280x720 for resolution. On a phone screen, you could probably go lower because even though the native resolution is 720p, you don't usually hold the phone close enough to your face over the entire duration of a movie where you will actually need that extra fidelity provided by 720p.

Just my personal opinion. HandBrake is decent. I always experienced audio out of sync issues with it. No matter what I did to correct it...it kept occurring. Maybe it has changed for the better.

I'll upload some sample clips tonight on here...if anyone would want to see them (using DVD Catalyst). I get off work in 3 hours....will do them then.

To be honest, I've never had that happened, but I've used it fairly infrequently. I did use it to convert Season 2 of Dr. Who (not HD res) for my iPad when I was traveling, and that worked perfectly.

I'd probably spend money on software if I had a huge movie/video collection that I needed to convert, but I only need to convert vids to load up when traveling, which isn't all that often .

I use DVD Catalyst too. Been using it since the OG Droid days. Works flawless for the nexus as well.

I'd recommend using DVDFAB as it provides the most flexibility for copying/ripping DVD and Blurays. MKV containers are quickly becoming the industry standard and I personally like using H.264 codec and use "audiocopy" which copies the original audio format of the DVD/Bluray for use in my home theater. Blurays are ~30-40GB each if uncompressed, and as a HT buff, struggle with compressing them down too much which means you need a lot of storage space.

For viewing on the Nexus (or my tablet) however, compressing movies down to ~2GB MP4s makes sense and you won't see a difference - I also change audio to 2Ch stereo. Your target bit/pixel rate should be in the .3-.5 range and I would recommend changing your frame rate to 29.97fps.

Most of mine are 720p to 1080p in mp4 at 23-24 frames per second and they play fine. They also avg around 700mb.

For converting blu-ray, since the native encryption causes problems for DVD Catalyst, do you guys use MakeMKV first, then have DVD Catalyst rip from that, as detailed here?
