What do you use for Hot Spot

I rarely tether, but I'm stock, unrooted, currently using elixir widget.

I just looked and saw several versions, of elixir, elixir 2, personal add-on, etc.

Which one do you guys use, and does it work well on our Gnex since it's ICS and all (I think I saw that one of the programs' last update was 6 months ago).

I don't mind rooting, just need to know which one works well and is easy to do.
All I'm looking for is :
wireless tether
better battery life (if any roots help with that),
better signal switching (right now I may loose 4G and not have any signal for a minute or two, and then all of the sudden 4G 3-5bars again)
maybe an ability to auto-fill contacts as I start typing phone number (something I had on my DroidX, but not on this one). I liked that I could start typing 400, and it would show me all the numbers (contacts and recent called) containing those numbers.

Anything else like faster portrait/landscape switching, no lock, etc. would just be gravy.

A ROM will help you in all those. Off the top of my head, and I didn't do much research just word from others, I believe Axiom ROM covers all those. Check out the ROMs section and read up.

If you are going to root and ROM, your phone will require a factory reset so you will lose your information.

Elixir 2 - Widgets

I downloaded that app, but I can't figure out how to use it as a tether. I'm stock, and just wanna use my Nexus as a hotspot for when my sone comes over with his Android tablet. Is there another app I have to download? I'm lost, and don't really wanna pay Verizon any more money than I already do.

I used to use hot spot for my laptop from my DroidX before the update ruined that experiance.

Now that I'm Gnex, what do you guys use to use your cell to connect laptops to the net?
I'm on stock OS (no root), and because I'm on unlimited data ( and refuse to pay for VZ's hot spot service with it's reduced data plan and additional fee), I'm looking for options.

I would obviously prefer for it to be wireless, but if I have to go the tether route, than so be it.

I'm also on unlimited data and I chose to pay the additional 30 bucks for the Verizon hotspot because I'm using it all the time (lots of data) and don't want to risk any trouble. I'm truly unlimited in this fashion so I'm confused about that part where you say "reduced data plan".

I called VZ in June and again in Nov. and both times I was told that phone data is(was) unlimited, but that once you choose the $30 hot spot option, ALL of your data (yes, including what used to be unlimited) was now reduced to the 2Gb (may have been 4Gb).
So, you end up paying $30/mo for the privilege of the hotspot, but both hotspot and regular data (email/surf/downloads) we now the subject of the data limit, with additional charges once limits were exceeded.

No other app needed. Go to your widget tab, select a widget (whatever size you'd like), drag to your screen. When you let go to place it on your screen, the app opens up for you to assign a function and change its look. Press the "X" on the icon and select Wi-Fi AP (Hotspot) toggle.

To turn it off, you have to go to the Portable Wifi hotspot in Settings and uncheck. For whatever reason, I can't get mine to turn off by pressing the widget again. Not a big deal though. And for what it's worth, I have no idea if VZW can track this...

Thank you! I got it working, but when I go to connect from another device, it's calling for a password to unlock the wifi. Where do I go to set that up at?

You guys need to stop spreading the elixr thing around pm it to these people. If we keep making big threads its likely to get patched and then where will we all be? And I don't want to root my nexus. Esp. Not for wifi tether.
