i installed the update before going through the steps.
i'm not sure why, but mine failed a couple of times trying to get past the bootloader (step 7). after a few reboots and attempts (i did nothing different as far as i can tell), it worked.
rooting was no problem. as has been reported, it hung at "google" for a few minutes but then all went well.

ohh I C. what does it take to compile a recovery? root access and a DEV trick or two to pull the img from the device?
