The Defender bulks up the phone quite a bit, as does the Commuter just not so much and its still a good solid case. You can be confident that your phone will be protected with any Otterbox cases. http://amzn.to/MOjhvW

i don't like the design of the defender case. they put the phone in the hardshell and then surround it with silicon. it should be the other way around -- have you noticed any damage to the phone body because of the case ? if the hardshell is tight or difficult to get the phone into, it could scratch the device. i've experienced this in the past with a droid and with an otterbox case, the bezel going on the screen would scratch the phone screen bezel a little bit each time i took it off/put it back on.
i'm leaning towards the commuter over the silicrylic. i've gone thru 2 silicrylic cases for my droid X because the shell was thin and cracked. on my second one it started to crack and come apart in a few corners. i like the non-slip finish of incipio's case but i'd rather just get the commuter and have that last longer. it's also got covers for the ports which i like.
but i'm not too keen on forcing the case on the phone with the ext batt + cover, i've also learned that putting pressure on a phone might affect it's function, especially with a phone made of plastic rather than metal. if i have no other choice, i'd run it without the battery door.

the Otterbox Commuter will work, if you want to see some review of costumers who have used the product refer to this: Amazon.com: nexus
i decided ultimately on the silicrylic. the shell is thin enough that popping the ext. batt in wont cause fitment problems and i always hated otterbox's smooth finish, slippery.
wen i get my ext batt ill test it out. there is a little play in the back where the battery door is, i can compress the shell a little, so hopefully the new batt and cover should go on ok. plus the silicrylic is 1/2 the price of the otterbox.

edit:
i bought the extended battery and installed it along with the cover and put the case on. the shell goes back onto the silicone jacket ok, but on the left and right sides the shell doesn't fully seal up with the silicone, it leaves a small gap on each side .... i decided to store the battery and just run with the stock battery. don't want to use the extended battery without the door.
maybe someday there will be a case made that accommodates the oem extended battery

been poking around about this situation .... there are 2 cases that are stated to work, Seidio's Surface extended (has a metal kickstand) .... and the Speck Pixelskin HD.

the Commuter is a good case as well, its a nice solid case without adding as much bulk as the defender. Here are some pictures and reviews for you to compare.

i just got the pixelskin hd for the g-nex and its perfect .... fits with the ext batt perfect, also doesnt collect lint compared with silicone rubber ....
it is a bit more slippery than the silicrylic but still more grippy than the commuter.
worth the 30$ imo
