I'm asking because when I have my nexus plugged into the car charger it still drains while I'm using the GPS. Does anyone know of a good charger that won't let this happen?

Motorola micro-USB rapid charger found on Amazon. It's very fast.

MOMAX car charger, brand product, worth to trust but a little expensive $14.96 - TinyDeal - (MOMAX) 2.1A Car Charger for USB Devices - Black MCG-77408
my Verizon branded one charges in AC mode.
but also if you're rooted, there's a way to make it charge ac even when using usb. my kernal app has the option. its handy for using the cheap charger in my other car or when charging from a pc or laptop
This is the charger I use, I keep it in my car lighter and just use the u.s.b. cable it came with.

I can't really vouche for the speed of the charge but sprint corp stores sell a $40 car charger that doubles as a home charger with a USB y split. On top of this it's a NON coiled cord (which means your port won't be being bent constantly) and the cord is da$n near 7 foot long, one of the best chargers I've ever bought. I buy them for for everyone as gifts lol, they're so useful.
You can do it by having a kernel that supports fast charge, or by getting a cable that's charge-only (or supports it) instead of data transfer capable.
