Before I ask a question, I just want to say that I continue to praise your software to anyone that I know that likes to watch digital copies of movies on their devices. They are often remarking at the quality of videos that I have converted on my phone, tablet, and laptop. And, as always, I appreciate the great support you have always given here in the community.
I have two questions, one of which I think I know the answer, but just wanted to run it by you see what you thought.
1. As always, people are trying to find that 'magic' combo for getting high quality videos, with the best compression rate. What I'm doing, is taking my bluray movies that I have and I'm moving them to a 1.0 TB NAS device that my TV can access. This way, I don't even have to bother switching discs. I've already used the process for my DVDs. It's awesome having all 11 seasons of Cheers and 11 seasons of Fraiser on my HDD so I can just pick an episode and watch. (And I'm not a Netflix customer... someone always has to try to point that out to me.)
What I've been doing for bluray, is that I've been using the 'backup' profile, using the 5000kbps rate, with 5.1 encoding, and 1080. A 2 hour movie roughly comes out at about 3.0+ gigs in size. The quality looks really good! My question is: Is that overkill? Would using a rate of 3000kbps look almost just as good, but reduce the size even more? I know I could also do it at 720 to further reduce that down, but I don't mind the extra size for a good clean picture.
2. My second question is really what I'm wanting to ask. I recently just discovered (on accident) that DVDCatalyst will do 'chapters' in MP4 files. I ran a test tonight and discovered that bluray movies will not support this and it marks chapters using the standard '5 minute' (or whatever is defined in the settings) mark. Is there a way to keep the chapter info on a bluray? I know the settings say for DVD, but I didn't know since it was disc based if it treated it the same. (I also assume it does chapters differently than DVD as well, which might be harder to read.) That would be a FANTASTIC feature for future release(s).
Always, thanks for the wonderful software! I have enjoyed using it a lot. Outside of hockey tickets... best $10 you can spend. LOL
