Thank you for reading the 56th DVD Catalyst Newsletter.
Last Sunday, I started a special discount for DVD Catalyst 4. With a lot of moms getting gadgets such as the Kindle Fire and NOOK tablet for Mothers Day, what better to compliment a new multi-function eReader than to add video functionality to it.
Of course DVD Catalyst 4 was already running with a 50% off sale price, but now with this special, it is at its most affordable price ever, $8.95. It will never get lower than that, but this special will not last long.
Also this week I've been preparing for a trip to my parents. Originally we had it planned that both me and my wife would be heading over there, but due to some health issues my wife is experiencing, along with flight-anxiety, we had to postpone it for a bit, but with my parents getting older, we figured it would be best if I go and visit, and spend some time with them.
Even though I will not be in my office, I will still be answering questions and emails and such, however, during the time that I am gone, my response time will of course be affected. I'll still respond within a day though.
I would like to request that if there are questions that can be answered at a later date, please save them for the beginning of June.
More about my preparation, as well as what I am actually taking along with me on my trip and why a bit further down in this newsletter.
Verizon Unlimited Plans.
This week, Verizon announced some changes in its unlimited data plan. Supposedly the people moving to 4G will end up losing it all together and will migrate to a 4G shared plan. I am currently on unlimited myself, so I'm not too happy in losing it, so I hope VZW will keep pricing decent for a fair amount of bandwidth.
dotCom Boom v2.
It looks like internet companies are starting to crawl out of the depression. With Facebook buying out Instagram and Lightbox for large amounts of doh, Pinterest being estimated at 1.5bil, Rovio (Angry Birds), making 48mil last year alone. hese numbers remind me of the 90's when companies valued internet-companies super-high.
HTC is having some difficulties in getting its phones on the shelves. With Apple's lawyers working hard, US Customs has put a block on some shipments of phones. With Apple's suit against Samsung addressing similar concerns, who knows what will happen with the Galaxy S3.
One of the most anticipated games of the year or even decade, was released this week. Blizzard's (WoW) "other" francise, Diablo, has been released this week. Unfortunately, day one was pestered with server issues, leaving many players spending the majority of the time fighting with it in order to get to play the game. With an internet connection required in order to play the game, it was a let -down for many because they couldn't connect to the servers.
DVD Catalyst News:
If you have not picked up DVD Catalyst 4 yet, this is your moment.
Currently, I am running a Mother's Day Special, which includes an additional discount on the already heavily discounted price. You can pick up DVD Catalyst 4 for only 9 bucks.
It will never get any lower than that.
As mentioned earlier, this week I've spent most of my time preparing for trip to visit my parents, so I haven't been able to do much in terms of development on DVD Catalyst 4. There is something big going on, however, this will, if things go well, be revealed after I get back.
The $8.95 Mothers Day Special Price will run until I get back as well.
Aside from the Mothers Day Special, which basically just popped in my head last Sunday,
I didn't have too much time for writing informative articles, however, because the preparation did involve getting some movies converted to take with me, I did post a few DVD articles:
I did write articles for the rest of the movies I am taking along with me, and those are scheduled to appear on my website automatically during my visit.
Next week, I'll be visiting my parents. Originally both me and my wife were going, but unfortunately, my wife is recovering from lung issues. She has never flown before, so we are afraid that the anxiety she has towards flying would make things worse. With my parents getting older, we decided it would be best for me to go over and spend time with them before anything major occurs.
During the time I am with my parents, I will be answering emails on a daily basis, but of course, I will be spending the majority of my time with my parents, so my response time will be affected.
Since it is only for a week, I will be traveling light. With most of my previous encounters with airports, I ended up waiting for my baggage endlessly because somehow my suitcases end up on different flights, often to different continents, so just taking a carry-on makes things a lot easier. Because of this, and the annoying security checkpoints, I will not e bringing a laptop or something similar, but I will be bringing something else to keep me entertained.
With the large collection of gadgets that I have, it was not easy to decide what to bring. I needed something that has a decent battery life, and let me use memorycards, and lets me use a batterypack with a USB port on it to provide some additional charge just in case.
I love the way the Blackberry Playbook works, and it has a good Battery life, but without a memory-card slot, and only 16GB of memory, it didn't serve my needs. This also ruled out the similar-sized Kindle Fire, and the iPad3.
The NOOK color would be fine, but unfortunately, I keep fighting with the screen. The touch part is always causing some complications for me.
The Xoom would be great, but it is too big for me to carry around comfortably, and it doesn't charge through USB.
So, I am currently contemplating between the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0, which I had to pick up for development issues with TouchWiz) and the NOOK tablet.
I know for sure I will be taking along my Kindle eReader, loaded with a couple of books, but I'm not sure yet on which one to use for video. I am leaning towards the Galaxy Player because the NOOK uses custom charging, and I'm not sure if the battery-pack will be able to charge it at enough of a rate to keep it running. I used a different charger for it yesterday to charge it from zero, and after 9 hours, it reached 93% of a charge. I can only imagine what it would do on a battery pack, so I'm leaning towards the Galaxy Player 5.0.
With previous flights, I relied on an 8GB iPod Touch to keep me entertained, and I always found that I wanted to watch something that I didn't had on it, so this time, I will be bringing 3 32GB cards filled with videos, ranging from some animated tv shows such as Spiderman and Transformers, some Star Trek Voyager episodes, and of course a nice collection of movies, X-Men, Blade, etc.
This time I will have plenty of stuff to choose from.
And that is it for this week's newsletter. I am sorry for keeping it shorter than usual (next week will likely be even shorter) but I still have to finish up some things before I am off to see my parents.
Thank you for reading this week's newsletter, and see you next week,
