DVD Catalyst Newsletter #20
Thank you for reading the DVD Catalyst Newsletter.
This week was pretty boring when it comes to tech-news. Last week, there was quite a bit going on with new device announcements thanks to the IFA show, but it has dried up, and it looks like the tech world is taking a few days off. I've been digging through some of the articles on popular tech websites, but I haven't found anything that really grabbed my interest.
DVD Catalyst News:
Also not really that much, however, this week I did update MovieGallery for the NOOKcolor. There were some complications with adding/removing videos if you had the last video selected, which has been addressed. I also made some other small changes, and re-organized some stuff internally to make the experience more enjoyable. The Android Market version is due for an update as well, but I am finishing up some requests. One of them being able to use an external player such as Mobo Player/RockPlayer to add support for AVI and MKV video files.
MovieGallery has recently been approved by B&N for its NOOKcolor Appstore, and while I have received many great reviews, there are quite a few "bad" reviews that are disappointing. While I completely understand it when people encounter complications that they write a negative review, many of them are just sad. Here are a few of them that stand out:
1 Star: Are the movies free how does this work???
2 Star: If anyome has dvd catalyst can you send it to me via e-mail? Im only 15 and im not alowed to buy stuff on our computer unless my parents say so. I know they would say no. I would rate this higher if it could play itunes movies.
2 Star: Wait so you can watch movies on this???
The description on the appstore includes the information needed, and of course it includes a web-link to obtain additional information and my email address so people can ask questions, but even though the NOOKcolor is marketed as an eReader, the description is not being read.
What these people (well, they are posted as mr/mrs "Anonymous" so contacting them is impossible) don't realize is that the review system is one-way. It is not a "message-board", and these so-called reviews affect the overall star-rating of the app itself. As a developer, I can add answers to these questions in the product description, but since that is not being read, what is the use?
As I mentioned before, I don't mind it if the bad reviews are valid, but a 1 Star "review" asking a question that is already explained in the product description is just sad. You are using an eReader device.
Actually, only one this week. We are still in our home-improvement process, and while it has slowed down quite a bit, this week, I did have a few projects I had to finish up.

Quite often people ask me what the best settings are for their conversions. In order to shine some light on this question, I wrote a (short) article about what settings I use for my own conversions, and what additional settings I enable in DVD Catalyst. I believe quality is something personal. While many conversion guides and conversion tools basically tell you to use these particular settings for the best results, the results are something that can only be judged by yourself.
Thank you for reading the newsletter. I am looking for ideas to write, so if you have any questions regarding something DVD Catalyst or video-related, and would like me to provide additional info on it, feel free to send me an email. I'll gladly answer your questions by either email, newsletter or maybe even an article on my website.
