    droid x and coffee ...help

Ok so here is what has happened so far and looking to see if anyone knows what i should/need to do. This morning my wife was looking at my phone and spilled a little coffee on it. Really it was a few drops but it must have found its way through the cracks. It worked for 15 minutes but i started noticing the keyboard would not come up and then in the middle of a phone call it dies completely without warning. Tried rebboting and nothing. Tried getting into CW and nothing. i plugged it in the the charger and it would blink the boot screen and would not show it charging. Oh before i did any of this and after the coffee was spilled i wiped it down and shut the phone off to clean any liquid. So after trying to turn it on i took it apart to see if there was coffee anywhere and nothing but i cleaned it the best i could. So it has been now 7 hours and it still is not working.

What im now wondering is 2 fold. 1. is there anything else i can do and 2 if not should i call verizon and see about my insurance and what they can do. Should i let them know liquid got on it or should i say i dropped it. Kinda in the dark on this as i have never had to work with insurance before.

Thanks for any and all help

    Jeff

You should have pulled the battery and put it in a bag of rice for at least a day.

If you have insurance, you'll have to pay a $100 deductible. File a claim on insurance and pay the deductible and they'll give you another phone (it may not be the same model depending on their stock).

They will know that there was moisture in the phone because it trips moisture indicators.

Well, coffee has residue that it leaves behind which is Acidic, pH of like 5, so it will begin to corrode certain components if left unaddressed. Unfortunately you can't just rinse it with water as that will do damage as well. Normally people would tell you to put the phone into a bag of rice, but in this case, you need to get the coffee residue out first.

I am not condoning the following but I have heard that w
hat you should do is get some 95% alcohol from the pharmacy and bath the phone in it. The alcohol will dilute the water-based residue and remove it leaving behind no coffee residue. I am much more confident in using something off the shelf that's designed for removing grease and other residue, such as "Deoxit" or another non-residue based contact or tuner cleaner. You must make sure that whatever you use first doesn't leave any lubrication or other oil-based residue, it should dry clean and free of any deposits. To test, do it on a window and afterwards rub your finger across the glass to see if it's left clean.

    Good luck!

Ok well it did come on. I took the whole phone apart right after it happened. Meaning remove the batt, back case, front case and circuit board and everything and wiped it down with a qtip with 70 % isoprophyl alchohol. It took the 7-8 hours for it to come on and boots up fine, but now all it wants to do is take pics. I open facebook, browser, ect and it reverts itself to pic taking. Inly thing i can think of is coffee got in on the red cam buttom and is sticking or something.
Also i have that Asurion or whatever ins. As far as i read moisture is included in their ins. I guess ill dissasemble later tonight and reclean w the iso alcohol

If you take it apart again, and since you've had success with the alcohol swap the 70% alcohol for 95%, put it into a bowl, and submerge the motherboard. Swish it around for a bit and let it soak. The alcohol will displace and pull any remaining water out and also remove all the remaining residue. The 70% alcohol is 30% water and you want it to pull water from the motherboard and switches. The 95% alcohol will do much better.

Do the same with the digitizer.

After a while remove them and allow them to thoroughly dry. A couple hours sitting them in the sun will accelerate the evaporation.

Once done, resemble and give it one last try. If it still wants to take pictures, I'd claim it on the insurance. If your policy covers water damage, you're good to go.

    Good luck!
