Radio/signal cutting off when screen off?

Lately I've been noticing that when I hit the wake up button, when the screen comes on there's no signal
icon. There may be the "bars" but there's no X, 1x, or 3G indicator for a few seconds. Those of you who have used Juice Defender will know what I'm talking about, but I'm not using it.

The big issue for me is that it seems to be not bringing in my Gtalk texts while it's acting this way.... it's signing out or at least killing the connection. I wonder if it's doing that with Gtalk, what else am I missing out on.

Any ideas?
