Think I found a fix. Menu, settings, Battery and data manager, battery mode, performance mode radio button.

So far it seems to work. With these intermittent behaviours, it takes a while to know for sure.

Some of you guys with the same problem - give it a try, and post your results if you get a chance.

What is performance mode radio button? I see performance mode, but that just allows auto sync at all times. What does it have to do with radio button?

Did you upgrade from froyo (2.2) to gingerbread (2.3.3). That option is not on froyo. In menu, options, battery, there ae 4 options. first 2 are data manager, second 2 are for battery. The second of those is the usual usage statistics. The first of the two is battery mode. In there, there are 4 options. Tthe third is "performance mode", select with a radio button. then button lights will stay on (at least mine have, so far).

But upgrade to gingerbread to obtain this option. Menu, setting, about phone, system updates.

Just curious. How do you go from your gingerbread upgrade back to froyo? Do you do a phone hard reset (and lose all your downloaded apps and customized home screen shortcuts), or can you downloan an "update" to the latest revision of froyo, and keep all your downloaded apps etc.?

you have to SBF it to froyo with RDS lite. this will wipe the phone back to how it came out of the box with froyo. this will cause a bootloop and you need to do a data wipe from the bootloadter recovery 2-3 times to clear it then reset the phone as you would doing a normal factory reset.

I think I figured it out. The phone tracks the ambient lighting and "decides" whether or not to use the button lights.

The lights stopped coming on, so I rebooted, and they worked ok for about half a day. Then they seemed to develop a mind of their own - work in some rooms but not in others. Finally, after about a day, they quit working altogether. I took the phone outside into bright sunlight for about half a minute, came back inside, sleep and unsleep the phone, and voila, the lights were back.
