DX key pad won't accept numbers for password

Both my wife and I have Droid X.
On accessing our voicemail sometimes we can only enter a couple numbers of our password and then the next number touched acts like a dead key.

Then reentering the password the phone thinks you have the wrong password. Painfull loop
