droid x wifi hacks

Hello,

I have two questions about the droid x wifi setup:

1.) I have looked around though I have not found anything indicating that a static ip address can be used with this phone, as opposed to my laptop, are there mods to fix this?
2.) The wifi will connect to a router well enough though ad-hoc networks are not supported, are there any workarounds for this? I would like to sync the phone directly to my laptop without using a hotspot if possible.
