Is Droid X a useful device without Service?

My NE2 is coming up and I am toying with the idea of upgrading. I was curious if I could still use the Droid X for my music. It seems like several months ago I saw a custom ROM for another handset that was made to use the device for media, internet, etc. Is that even necessary? It seems logical that the phone would function normally without service, but I was just wondering if anyone was using their Droid X minus service or had any advice.

I'd rather have the $150 that it's worth!

    $150 is tempting

I just want to replace my iPod Touch. It drives me crazy to have to use iTunes. It is insane to me that in this day and age you still have to sit down and sync with a cable. Furthermore, iTunes is just cumbersome. I am perfectly fine with my music out in the cloud on Google Music, Amazon, dropbox or wherever else. I buy something from Amazon and I can listen to it instantly on my phone or if I download it to my computer Google's Music manager notes the change and uploads it to my collection. Done. To use my iPod, I have to load my music into iTunes because it doesn't always happen automatically and then, THEN, I have to remember to plug in my iPod and sync it or I don't have my new purchases. Annoying.

Yes I could just use my DX, but battery life is king. I'd rather just have a separate device for mp3s to conserve precious battery life.

EDIT: I'll just sell the 32GB iPod Touch.

I would definitely prefer having an android MP3 player to an iPod, I agree, just sell the ipod and keep the Droid X. Stick it in airplane mode when you're away from wifi areas and get amazing battery life and a nicer device than an ipod
