    what is 2.3.340 (or whatever)?

I hear everyone talking about this and I was wondering what it means. I apearantly am running 2.2.1 and 2.3.315 or something. not sure whats different between mine and the 2.3.340 and if I should get it. . . also what would I do to get it on my phone? I downloaded three update files for the 2.3.340 but am not sure how to install them or if I should install them.

Not a lot of differences from what I've seen from others.
