PDANet acts like a pass-through. When you turn on USB debugging, it allows the software on your PC to interact with the app on the phone. In this case, it's passing 'net data through it out to the towers. It looks and acts no different on the network as if you were browsing the web on your phone or checking email, etc. etc.
i use pdanet all the time for wired and wireless tethering. after the 2 weeks or 30 days you have to purchase it. but if you are rooted there is so many other ways to get tethering, both wired and wireless. and you can make a wifi hotspot even on a D1 with the rooted versions.

I leave auto updates off all the time. I get DSL speed when I hard wire tether on pdanet. Its pretty good.

I could never get it to work properly but I just use wireless tether now on my rooted X.
