Dialing extensions?

On my old phone (non smart phone) I could program a contact with a phone number with an extension but putting a "#" between the Phone number and the extension number. I could even use "##" to have the phone wait for me to send the extension number until I pressed a button.

Well on the DroidX # doesn't seem to do that. I've been told that "," work on other smart phones, but it only seems to work partially. It doesn't wait long enough before sending the tones.

Anyone know how to dial extension propperly?
