question about syncing b/w apple's mail client and android.

I wasn't sure exactly how to search for this, so I apologize if this thread already exists, but I've got a bit of an issue with the way things sync with my e-mail account. The biggest problem in this regard is that if I read an e-mail on my laptop (using apple's mail client), it still lists itself as new on my Droid X. The reverse problem does not exist. Does anyone have any idea how to change that feature? Thanks
