I will switch phones with anyone who thinks it's just that I have a hearing problem.
I agree that the Droid X is not loud enough. I have missed several calls when the phone is in my purse. I am also having trouble hearing and receiving calendar alerts. My Palm would continue to alert me of an appt at least 3 times. The Droid X only gives one alert, if at all, and if you happen to be away from your phone you miss it. Again, the volume level of the alert is not significant to get your attention.
I had the same issue until I updated my phone with the new Droid X update. It's not the Froyo update, so don't get it twisted. Make sure you're running the newer and current system version. It corrected my low sound quality.
It's stupid low. Update never fixed a thing with mine, or most people. Now I never had a moto droid and I'm not an engineer, but someone please tell me why the speaker is on the back of the unit? This wouldn't matter with the device being in ones pocket, but the reason no one can hear it when it's sitting right on the coffee table is because the sound comes out of a speaker pointing away from you. Stupid stupid stupid. I hate it, drives me effin crazy.
But when your on the phone, if you turn it over and place it on the table it has a handy feature that automatically puts it in speakerphone mode. I guess the thinking is that to use speakerphone with a speaker on the back, you lay it face down.
There are already several main forum threads for reporting and documenting experiences with the Droid X low volume/speaker problem. Here are two of them:
1) Droid X Speaker Volume
2) Volume issue on new Droid X - Verizon Wireless Community
Also, here are two informative posts about the matter:
4) Special Post on How to Make Progress with the Alleged Low Volume Speaker Problem
One of the links at (4) above it out of date. So please use and follow the links at (1) and (2) above. Also, please pay special attention to the information in reply (3) above

I've yet to receive my X (ship date of 8-3) but I know that with other phones that I've had with volume issues. Have you ever seen that movie crank? You know his annoying yet catchy ringtone? I've sent it to my phone from funformobile.com and it proved to be quite loud enough to wake me and I'm a really heavy sleeper.
EDIT: Well at least until they resolve the issue anyways.
This is a really really helpful, and thanks for posting it. The volume question is significant. Not only because I miss calls, but because the "email received" alert is so loud, it is totally unrealistic to say that there is a speaker issue. Seems more like a programming issue.
In fact the email received alerts are so loud they are driving me nuts. I lower the volume on them, but Ooops that means I can't hear the phone.
They don't seem to be in line with each other.
I have to tell you that it seems like the engineers are still running the show Jha. The intuitiveness and the ease of use just ain't there, at least that I have found so far.
