If you want to recover the data from sd card you need for format it first then you can use photo recovery software for recovery purpose. I hope it vl work for you.

I believe if you format it first, it will erase everything on your card.

No it will certainly not you can easily recover your photos if you had formatted, deleted or lost your data from sd card. For that you have to use any of the photo recovery software.

I suppose if recovery software has improved dramatically then possibly but the last time i made an attempt, what I recovered was not fool proof or without errors. Pics were choppy, broken up like puzzles, or not recoverable, etc.

How well does it work. I had to do that only once but I used several programs trying to get decent results. The next question is, if you wanted to format something (internal memory on a phone or an SD card) to make sure that nothing was recoverable, is that possible? I think about the phones I sent back reformatted but soon to be refurbished and then on into someone else's hands. Would they be able to recover your pics or information using recovery software?

If it is physically damaged software cannot help you.
