Apps are backed up to the sdcard. Switch the card.

They aren't if he didn't use an app like Titanium Backup.

To the OP, usually only the paid ones stay backed up with Google. The rest you have to find and add yourself

login to http://market.android.com/ and you should be able to see your free & paid apps
    Do you like uninstallable bloatware?
It takes about 5 minutes to complain and it's kinda fun. Let's not be complacent!

To me, Google retaining your apps is not a backup, so when the OP said backup, I assumed they were referring to an actual backup.

Make sure that you're using the same email account that you used to purchase the apps.

I hear ya, but it seems like there is a common misconception that Google backs up apps that you've downloaded from the market. And sometimes it actually does, but its rare and can't be counted on

And then click each one and send it to your new phone
Droid does some cool and amazing things. Yet it does not do some basic stuff that has been stock on most phones for years. It makes me think the Google developers were marooned in some kind of a 1977 LOST flashback/flashforward/sideways combo reality gameshow
