Droid X shows odd amounts of total ram?

I have searched all over google and haven't been able to find out an answer to this. my X only shows between 350 and 380mb of total ram. i get this number from adding the free and used ram under running apps. is this normal? and if so, what is the remaining ram being used for? its supposed to 512mb right?
