Transfering epub files from computer to phone.

I have an ereader that uses epub files, that is not a nook. I am trying to transfer them to my phone, I am using the nook app, which also uses epub files.

I connect my phone to the computer and I have it set to usb mass storage when it connects. I find the file on my computer and I have tried two ways to transfer: 1. copy/paste, 2. drag/drop. I put the files in the same folder with the books that came with the app. When I go back to the nook app, the files that I have transfered are not available for selection. What other way is there? I don't want to root.

Edit: I have downloaded "Nook for PC", moved my epub files to that library and tried to sync. It didn't work.
