I've made icons as large as 120 x 120 px and they worked just fine, as long as the icon pixel size is 1:1.

I set mine at about 70 pixels for width, and let Photoshop determine the other dimension by constraining the proportions.

For what it's worth, it seems that the SDK creates three different sets of icons for your apps, to cover three different screen resolutions: 72x72, 48x48, and 36x36.
