I am trying to figure out how to get some of these themes O really like some of them hand have no clue how to get them on my stock droid do I need to root it if so how do i safely do that I am new to all of this.

Most everything you can do from your phone. To help, it's important for us to know what you're starting from, OS version and the like.

I have the 2.1 for the moto droid. I have not rooted it or anything like that. I have just been running it the way it came out of box.

So your first step is to root, there are a few tutorials around here.... Sorry, I'm on my phone and cant link you to one of them.

The process is basically applying an exploit in the code that is used to gain root access. If you're unfamiliar with Linux, root is one of the terms used for administrator-level access. It enables you to have more access and control over the operating system and it's interaction with the hardware. You enable the ability to remove stock apps, theme and customize, and make the hardware interact in a way that Moto didnt design it to do, eg, tethering.

ok thank you, now one more question on one of the instructions. it told me to download SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf. do i do that on my pc or phone? because I did it on my pc but I can't find any programs to open it

Read this http://www.droidforums.net/forum/hac...ot-unroot.html thread. It has everything you need to know on how to flash that file. However, I would suggest flashing the 2.0.1 sbf (also on that page), then using DMupdater (droidmod.org) to root your phone.
