When using different launcher, do they run in background?

I downloaded launcher pro and my question is...... does the HTC launcher stay running in the background? Trying to understand if it's like an application or not. For instance. I have widgets running on the HTC launcher..... do they continue to run, or does everything shut down until I load the HTC launcher again?

A launcher works just like any other app. It may stay in background for a time after you load another launcher, but it will eventually be killed and removed.

Note that while it is in the background any widgets you installed on that launcher will still be running. Once you've made up your mind to switch permanently some recommend you go back and remove any widgets from the launchers you are no longer using. I'm not convinced it matters much, myself.

I always delete or uninstall the other launcher(s) with a file manager like root explorer or in the application settings, so I don't have to worry about it running on the background
