Dialer skins

Hey everyone I was just wondering if there are any skins/themes to changing the way your phone dialer looks? I want round buttons instead of square ones, maybe change the colors as well. But anything at all would help =)

Without it being rooted would be prefered, i have not decided if I wanted to root the phone or not.

I was wondering the same thing, but I'm not to sure what you mean by rooted?

From what i understand, rooting the phone is tapping into some of the coding of the phone to gain access to functions like permformance and change some of the visual aspects of the phone. Like i've seen someone change their notification bar into a different color or make it transparent.

In unix/linux based systems the administrator account is called the "root" account. When you are logged in with this account you have write access to all system files and folders. This is what rooting your phone gives you. By default root access is not allowed on your phone because average users could get in there, delete or change the wrong file and bad things could happen. You can also do fun things though, like find where the default theme's notification bar image file is and swap it with a custom image file of your own. I imagine there is basically just a grey box png file that is used on all of the dialer buttons, which you could just swap out with a file of your own. Spacing may be off though if you change the shape, which you'd probably have to fix by editing code in the related text file which could be complicated. In the past though i've managed stuff like that by trail and error since it's not really an important setting.

Disclaimer: I haven't rooted my droid yet. I'm just assuming most of this from experience messing with similar things in my linux desktop.

Seriously. Rooting is as easy as copying a file and running an update, and it doesn't do anything malicious to your phone. I don't know why everyone is so hyped up about rooting. It's not that difficult and opens the phone up to worlds of new possibilities.

I think mainly because people see the warning "possibility of bricking" and thats a dealbreaker for most. Or the warranty.

Yeah, thats my bad. I didnt mean to de-rail the conversation. Im also wondering about Dialer Skins. Thanks for all of the info about rooting, I may have to look into it.

Don't worry about it, we didn't stray too far off track, its just crazy no ones thought of a skin for the dialer yet lol we have skins for the keyboard but not the dialer =( I wish i knew how to make this stuff lol

I think your phone has to be rooted to use these though.
