Need Help Removing Clockwork / Receiving OTA Updates

Hello everyone, This is my first post so bear with me as I try to explain my situation.

About 2 months ago I decided to take the plunge and root my droid. I did lots of research with the help of this forum as well as others, and got root access in a day! I played around with custom roms and themes, but I settled on just the stock Froyo with chevyno1's 1ghz ulv kernel. My phone runs great, I have setcpu profiles set (thanks to skull one's thread) and average about 14-15 hours a day.

About a week and a half ago, my friend asked if I knew any tricks for making his phone run faster, and I told him that I could root it for him and overclock it just like mine. He said do it, and I rooted his phone and applied the same settings that mine has, and now he has better battery life than me!

The only problem is, the new FRG83D OTA update came out last week, and my friend is stuck with a phone that won't install the update because clockwork recovery blocks it. I want to know if there is a way to remove or replace clockwork with a recovery (preferably stock) that will allow the OTA update to install. I know it will lose root if the update goes through, that is fine. I can re-root afterwards.

I would prefer not flashing a rom, this is my freinds phone and re-installing all of his files would be rather difficult. Please if anyone has any ideas, don't be shy!

Hi, use Rom Manager, from the market. Go to download rom then select stock images, select Verizon Droid 2.2 FRG01B, and do not check Superuser 2.2 It will reset the phone to 2.2 and then it will download any available OTA updates.

I reset one of my Droids this way and it was flawless. I ended up going back to UD later because I missed all the extra stuff, so he'll be able to re-root later if he wants.

You'll have to reinstall everything, but it'll be updated.

I would not suggest using this method, because when the OTA update downloads, Clockworkmod Recovery will block the installation and you will be left with a deprecated froyo build and no root... but at least you will still have clockworkmod recovery to get back *if you make a full nandroid backup before you do anything* (hint hint...make a backup!)

OTA updates only install using a STOCK recovery image.

Going back to stock is not the easiest thing in the world if you've never done it before, so ...

You should, instead, consider installing a stock ROOTED ROM -- they have had FRG83D ROMs out for awhile now. I think your friend will be pleased with the stock image, but having the ability to flash custom (overclocked) kernels and have more control over his device than a standard stock ROM.

metiCkMod develops the best stock ROMs out there imo.

Thank you for the replys guys! I actually installed the FRG83D rom on my phone when it came out, but like I said before, I don't want to have to re-install all of my freind's apps, along with the data and call history and bookmarks and such if possible.


If I make a nandroid before installation of the FRG83D rom, can I leave the data and cache? That would be the easiest way because I love clockwork EXCTEPT for the fact that it blocks OTA updates. But I guess it's just protecting it's own back.

When I used the method I described, it was back to stock. You're flashing a stock rom. Clockwork was gone, super user was gone, etc. I didn't say it, but you would of course wipe all data and cache, as well.

I have never used the the sbc method, so I can't speak to it, but I've read about it. I'm sure it works.

If your friend wants the newest release, there are some awesome roms built on it now. You could use clockwork to make a backup and install a few until he finds one he likes. Then restore the data. You'd still have to reset the desktop, but it would be newer with a lot more than just stock.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to do what you want w/o losing the data. Rom manager can flash a recovery boot... maybe that one would allow OTA updates?

Ok so I could Flash just stock FRG83D for exemple on my friends phone, make a nandroid before hand, wipe data and cache, re-root and then I would have to use clockwork to do a partial restore of just the data, and my friend would be up to date.

Or I could flash rooted FRG83D (this guy is scared of custom roms) and use titanium for the data restore, which would be faster.

The only problem with these is that I still would have clockwork!!! Thus guy wants to be able to receive the next OTA update whenever it may arrive.
One of you guys suggested that I use an sbf file, can you please elaborate on that? I have RSD lite as well as ADB.

Please be aware that an advanced nandroid restore of /data may cause instability (force close issues). The best/easiest way to restore "data" is to restore APP DATA ONLY using Titanium Backup (free app in the market).

The best way to mitigate "data loss" is to use Titanium Backup to restore apps and data. Just dl the app, and tap Menu>Batch>Backup All User Apps ... then when you boot into your new stock ROM, download Titanium Backup, turn on Airplane Mode (to stop the Market from downloading all your apps fresh) and then tap Menu>Batch>Restore All Apps With Data. This will restore APP DATA ONLY. This is the most stable way to restore data.

Leaving data and cache could cause significant instability, depending on which ROM you're coming from / going to. Since builds differ from one to the next, installing a different /system over an existing one can cause force close issues because it changes all the associations stored in the dalvik cache. Best to wipe data/cache 3x and restore as much as possible using Titanium Backup. It's free (the paid app is easier and faster, but it's $6 so I still use the free version).

Thank you Vaurnet, you answered a lot of my questions!

Perhaps I was fantasizing when I thought there was a way to simply remove or replace Clockwork with another recovery, one that didn't block OTA updates, simply un-root with everything still in place (titanium backup, setcpu, etc) and wait for the update. And then once it installs, re-root and overclock and everything else that comes with rooting.

Is there any way to perhaps execute that plot?

Pete's odexed and deodexed 'rom' files are based off the FRG83 leak, not the official FRG83D. And I know I'm late, but there is alot easier way to get this update to your friends phone without all the hassle. I'll link a specific post in this thread below. Make sure that the editing is either done with gedit (linux) or notepadd++ (windows):
