My problem is similar to mlcdroid's ... I used Ringdroid to create and assign rings to individual contacts, but I still get the default tone for every incoming call. Anyone else having trouble getting the Droid to recognize/use the contact-specific ring tones? Any suggestions?

Maybe we need to clarify the problem to help get a better answer. Problem 1 -- Does the contact-specific ringtone show up on your options (I mean, does it tell you you've set up the ringone), yet it doesn't actually play that ringtone?
Prolbem 2 -- Or, after you set up a ringtone, does it not "stick" (I mean that you set up the ringtone, you confirm that you set up the ringtone, yet, after some period of time you go back and the ringtone has mysteriously reverted back to default)?
I had problem 1 and one thing that fixed it (at least temporarily, see below) -- I cleaned up the contact. So, for a specific contact, I had 2 or 3 different versions of the information -- from my old phone, from gmail, and from importing contacts from Outlook. Once I cleaned it up, the ringtone did work, albeit only temporarily.
That's when problem 2 kicked in. At least the specific time I noticed problem 2, one night my phone was sort of stuck in a sync mode so that I didn't even have ANY of my contact info until the sync was done. After the sync was done (I could actually see it being completed, as the number of my contacts rose), the contact-specific ringtone had reverted to default. Not sure what this was about on many levels. (Why would the contacts info on the Droid's internal memory have been wiped such that it needed to be recovered by syncing?) But, the cleaning up I had done earlier seemed to have stuck, just not the ringtone. I reset the ringtone, but have not had a chance to test it yet.
I have seen some other recommendations indicating that I need to unmount my SD card in order to access the non-default ringtones. But, that doesn't seem right. My default ringtone was made with Ringdroid and that one comes up just fine. Further, the Droid can access my SD card just fine for numerous other purposes right now (e.g., Astro, playing music, etc.).

My problem was #1; it would show the custom ring tone under a contact, but when that contact called, I would hear the default. I am using the past tense because suddenly last night the custom tones started working. I did not change anything ... I have no idea what happened.
Maybe our Droids are becoming sentient

Hmm, just stumbled on an answer today, regarding downloading tones from emails. I had edited a clip I wanted, and emailed it to my gmail account. When I opened the clip in the native gmail client, like others, I only had the option to preview the clip, not download....
Solved this problem by going directly to my gmail account through the phone's browser-- not the built-in gmail app. There was my option to download, and five seconds layer I had it applied to the desired contact.
Hope this helps...

there is an app RingDroid that will edit your audio files on the droid
you can download imusic tao and "sample" the audio files and use Ringdroid to cut it down to what ever you want.

You can custom make your own also from MP3's or WAV files. They have wallpapers and games also. I swear by this site.
Thanks for reminding me.
Since I don't have my phone with me right now and everything I copied from my old phone didn't include my ringtones, I went here again. I found them. I couldn't figure out how to save them when I sent them to my phone, so I saved them to my PC (actually my phone by click on the save to PC, then Method 3 and under RINGSTONES). I used Astro and put one as a ringtone (still working on the others).

I use PhoneZoo as well though not as often as I used to, to make ringtones. I've only done it once for my Droid so far as there isn't any other song I want as ringtone for the moment but it worked just fine. The website is free to use and as long as you have the mp3 file of the song you want as a ringtone you can easily make it no problems at all!!
