No service at home, can smart actions disable phone?

My battery burns down searching for a phone network. I use wifi as a trigger to disable 4g, is there a way to keep background sync on but disable phone?

I know that Airplane Mode (Menu, Settings, Wireless & network Settings, Airplane Mode), will turn off ALL radios, and then you can manually turn on specific ones, such as WIFI, Bluetooth, GPS, etc. This will effectively shut down all Cellular communication, but I am not aware of a way to turn on Background Sync (which requires either 3G or 4G), and still not have Cellular on. I believe that both 3G and 4G rely on Cellular to make the initial connection to the tower and tell it what mode it wants to operate on. If Cellular isn't on, then the 3G and 4G radios are simply waiting dormant.

If anyone has anything else to add, please do.

EDIT: I remember a programming/diagnostic mode you could go into which would allow you to turn off Cellular radios, and I believe it allowed you to turn of CDMA but leave LTE on. This was achieved through a *#*#4636#*#* if I am not mistaken. Unfortunately either I am wrong with the code, or the recent update locked us out of that diagnostic mode. Any help here from the rest of you??

Go to settings then data connection switch your phone to CDME. You will only have 3g but you phone will last a lot longer. You can switch back when you want to use 4g

You are missing the point of the OP, he doesn't have CELLULAR SERVICE within range of his/her phone, so it keeps looking for a tower and drains the battery while pinging the towers. Turning to 3G (CDMA - not CDME) will not accomplish his/her goal of turning off the cellular (read phone) radio but keeping ON 3G/4G for data.

You can also select Airplane Mode by simply long pressing your power button. It will bring up a menu with one of the options being Airplane Mode.

As for getting LTE only, there is a way. Dial ##program(7764726). When it prompts for a password, enter 000000. Go to test mode and hit next a couple of times (don't recall how many) and you'll eventually get to a menu that, among many other things, has an option to change your cellular network. You can set it to LTE only. The only downside is you can't make phone calls since they're done over 3G. But, if you don't need phone calls but have a 4G signal, there you go.

For the OP, you can go to airplane mode and then enable WiFi. This will let you get all your data and such over WiFi, but your cell radios (including the phone) will all be off. If you use Google Voice, you can get an app called GrooVe IP that will let you make unlimited phone calls over data (WiFi, 3G, 4G) using your Google Voice number. I have it; well worth the money:

##program...THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!~ Way to go, Zandar!

As for Phone calls, I believe they're not actually done over either 3G or 4G (except via Voice over IP services such as GoogleVoice, GrooVe IP, etc.), they're done over either IS-95 or 1x (CDMA 2000 - AKA CDMA). I believe 3G EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized - AKA 3G), and 4G Standard LTE (3GPPP Long Term Evolution) are both Cellular Data only.

So the solution is to go with either LET only or EVDO only, but that's assuming the towers can see you and you can get them to authenticate without the CDMA carrier signal. This is where the big question mark is...

I know that in LTE only mode, as enabled by that method, you can't make phone calls.

Airplane mode and turn wifi back on sounds like the best solution.

Thanks for all the feedback! Oh, and I'm a he...

An expensive solution would be to purchase a Verizon network extender. That would give you service in your home.

And I actually have one I am willing to sell. It's not a Verizon branded one, it's a JAS Teletech PowerUP. Comes with a Yagi (directional) antenna, cabling, inside antenna, power supply and the repeater. I bought it, never installed it, and then Verizon added an antenna inside a nearby Church Spire, problem solved.

    Let me know in PM.
