    car dock not charging battery

Today i got to really use my car dock. I was on the road for 2 hours. When i inserted my phone my battery was at 60%. The thunder bolt was over the battery icon indicating it was being charged. The whole 2 hour trip i was using vz navigator. When i disconnected the phone from the dock the battery was still at 60 %. I thought even thou the phone was being used the battery would still charge.

I've heard from people that 4G plus the GPS navigation drains battery faster than it can charge. Personally, I use 3G while using navigation.

Even when 4G isn't connected it still tries to reconnect constantly.

Unless you switch to 3G (CDMA) only, which is: Settings > Wireless & Networks > mobile networks > Network Mode > CDMA only, it'll try to connect to 4G.

CDMA/LTE is 3G/4G. I downloaded an LTE switch which takes me straight to the CDMA /LTE setting.

Try using NAV without the dock and see if that works.

I find I have the same issue. I do know that if I remove the docking station and plug directly into the car charger, the phone DOES charge just fine while using nav or other apps. I think there is an issue with the contacts within the dock. I am trying to get this resolved by contacting Motorola today. Mine had been working fine up until this past week, and I have had my dock since Christmas and ICS since it came out.

The micro chip in the battery won't let it charge itself at full capacity (500ma) once the battery reaches 110 degrees, the higher the temps the less it will let it charge itself.
If your dock is on top of the dash in the sun, no good, the ambient temp will climb. On top of an AC vent is best.
Also using navigation and hunting signals will heat your battery up almost to that point.

lloydstrans, I know that ICS includes a new feature to tell you when your phone is overheating, and I agree that it will cut the charge down once that activates, but yesterday before I called Motorola, this is what I tried. I took my car dock into my office and plugged the wall charger into the dock. Then I put my phone on the dock and left it to charge for an hour. It's 72 in my office, and I left the phone display off, nothing running, etc. When I plugged it in I was at 80% charge and an hour later, you guessed it! 80% charge still! According to my phone, I was plugged in and charging the entire time. I took the phone off the dock, plugged it in directly to the wall charger and 15 minutes later my phone was fully charged. Obviously, the dock has some issue that is really odd with it, so I called Motorola. I explained the issues I was having, how they just began a week ago and what I had done to test out different setups before calling them. Once I completed my time explaining everything to them, they told me they are replacing my dock and will have me send the old one back in for testing. I would advise anyone that is having these issues to try the same steps then call Motorola. It is the only way they will find out they are having an issue.

I agree the dock has issues. The part I can't explain is that it used to be fine prior to ICS. Making even less sense. Upon driving for awhile (gps + 4G) I check to verify the phone is charging. If it's not, I disconnect it for 5 minutes and reconnect. This seems to work.

Kelly, your the first to post any such testing scenarios, my evaluation was based on all the cars running around with their phones sitting on top their dashes in the dock or suction cupped to the windshield in the sun.

I've been having the same issue with my RM and car dock. I rarely use the dock though, and am on a custom ROM. Kind of nice to see other people are also having issues. Hopefully there will be a fix in the future.

On a side note my RM doesn't even seem to go into car mode, but I'm thinking that's because of the ROM, and I don't know that it should impact whether the phone charges.
