the motorola site explains the other four symbols-wifi, bluetooth, gps, email download. but the fifth; a white "raggedy" filled in circle with a capital A -can't find definition anywhere? and it's not anything like the @ symbol...help pls?

Take and post a screen shot, hold down the volume down key and power button at the same time to trigger a screen shot. Then upload it here in a new post so we can see it.

That toggles the brightness of the screen. The "A" means its set to auto brightness
ahaha, you're talking about the power control widget, I thought you were talking about actual icons in the notification bar itself.
But yes, as CJM said, that "A" button toggles auto screen brightness on and off.
Also, you can get there without using the Power Widget. You'd go into Settings, then Display/Brightness to toggle it
