06-06-2012 03:47 PMYes an app is generally required. There are a ton of then in the market. I like androsensor, because it also monitors other sensor inputs in the device.
Most battery widget apps also monitor the battery temp

06-06-2012 04:22 PMBattery Monitor Widget is what I use, and it does that plus a whole lot more. What's even more amazing is it uses so little of the system resources that it doesn't even reach the Android "Battery use" page, and only 3.2MB on the "Running Services" side.

The phone does have its own temperature protocol whereby it will throttle back the processor and other resources, kill applications, if the temp gets too high, and can even reboot if necessary.
