Thinking of upgrading to the RAZR Maxx . . .

. . . provided Verizon will let me take an early upgrade, which they've done before (I've been a good customer for over 8 years now).

I've had my HTC Thunderbolt for almost a year now, and while it's been a great smartphone, battery life is ephemeral at best. I even tried the trick of using an HTC Rezound battery (1620mA vs. the TB's 1400mA), but that gave only marginal improvement - 7 hours of very light use before I'm down to the yellow? Not good. I want to go back to the days where I charged my phone overnight and took it for granted that it would be good for an entire day, at the very least.

So to that end, I have a couple questions:

First, Verizon's price (with 2-year contract) is $299. On Amazon, however, it's being offered for $199. Is there a catch?

Second, I'm currently grandfathered in under Verizon's unlimited 4G data. I won't lose that, will I?

Anything anyone wants to share that will convince me to make (or dissuade me from making) this move would be greatly appreciated!

Amazon's catch is they tack on some to the early termination. If you deactivate it within in a certain number of days (I believe it's 180 days, don't hold me to that though), they tack on their own ETF on top of Verizon's. If you don't change phones often it's a good deal.

You won't lose unlimited data either.

If battery life is important to you, you'll love the Maxx... awesome device with the one characteristic all other LTE phones don't have - battery life!

Go for it!!!! You'll love the Maxx. I think Amazon's pricing is just cheaper, no catch I dont think. I always purchase my phones from Verizon. If you are grandfathered in under Verizon (like me) 4G is unlimited so no worries. I think the Maxx is an awesome phone. Great durability, extensive battery life, good reception. I've tried everything I can to kill this battery and I just cant do it. I love having my battery life at 70-75% at bed time, after being off the charger for 16-18 hours. You will love it!!!!

You're not likely to get an early upgrade if you go through Amazon though. That's something someone at Verizon will have to directly authorize (especially if you upgraded when the Thunderbolt was released, which would make this a very early upgrade), and I doubt they'll authorize it for you to go and upgrade from another retailer.

I have just ordered the maxx as well its supposed to arrive tomorrow! My contract wasn't up for awhile but they let me upgrade early because I complained. I'm also under the unlimited data and nothing will change at all its a great deal as I used 10 gigs a month and they capped at 5 with the new plans. If they offer you an early upgrade they force you to do it over the phone through them. I asked if I could do it in store or from anywhere else they said no because this was a special manager comp thing.

You would have to go through Verizon as stated above. My understanding is, Verizon will give an early upgrade (normally after 1 year with a 2 year extension) for a 20.00 dollar upgrade fee. Distributors/Authorized Retailers are not authorized to do early upgrades. I have heard that Costco can, but not confirmed. You can try and ask Verizon to price match (good luck) but can't hurt to try. I know they are doing a special 4g upgrade but since you would be coming from a 4g phone that wouldn't apply either.
