I had trouble with this, Windows was being stupid. (provided your phone is in USB storage mode) go into the device properties, hardware tab, properties again, click change settings, switch to the driver tab, then update driver, browse my computer, let me pick, and select the USB drive one, NOT the MTP one which it was trying to install. Hope that makes sense, took me a while to figure this out.
