The 2.0.1 update is an update to the Android OS which is in OUR phones.
Yep.. .thanks Stigy.. that makes sense... the firmware is the software to the hardware "as I understand most firmware updates"... then you have software loaded as the OS.
I guess with Android, its one and the same?

I downloaded manually from the link in this thread.
I have "downloads" tab.
Scrolling in the browser is not as smooth as before.
Finished calls revert to home (nice).
No more lag.

UPDATE:
After speaking with VZ tech support it was determined that the probles I was having had nothing to do with the update but was a hardware issue. Thats a relief, and should help ease some peoples concerns about the manual update. A big thanks to New2udroid who went way out of his way to help me resolve the issue! Ill be getting my new phone today, if it ever stops snowing...

Anyone else getting a network error when trying to use the market? Worked fine last night.

Ok so I took the file to my verizon contact (I use to work at verizon corp. in columbus ohio) And we did a crc check of all the files in this patch and it IS the same so it IS safe. I updated my phone and it worked great.

I named it update.zip and not update.zip.zip, I've downloaded the file from different links and different browsers and have tried it from the computer and all on the phone, but I get the same thing every time. Here's what I get:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check("MTD:boot:[tons of letters and numbers]")
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Help would be appreciated. TIA.
Just change the name of the file to update that worked for me
No, actually it's supposed to be update.zip. Renaming it to update only helps people who don't know that their file extensions are hidden. I have it named correctly.
anybody else?
No what i'm saying is after you drop the zip file on your phone right click on it rename to update not update.zip as it is already a zip file then go thru the steps on the front page to load on phone it works, at least try it.

The file is right from google. There's no secret to it - Google makes Android as an open source project, so the files are available from them.

OK, mine started getting twitchy after the install. Thankfully I don't have a lot of settings personalized yet since my Droid's pretty new, so I did a factory reset and now everything works great, especially the camera.
