I am taking this in stride, only because I have bigger things to worry about than a software upgrade... Yeah, I want it, and I was looking forward to it, but another delay? Oh well...
From a customer service standpoint, this is not a good thing for Motorola, or Verizon. The main problem was the "hype" surrounding the 2.1 update, not sure how it got to be such a big deal, whether it was something that gained it's own momentum within the user community, or something that VZW/Motorola "hyped" on their own, is hard to say. There was a lot of secrecy surrounding the proposed dates, and at least one false alarm as far as a release date and time went, and I think, that just fed everyone's speculation, and added to the "hype". In my opinion, this whole update thing got a shade or two out of control. I am not sure what the pressure inside Motorola and Verizon is over this, but it would seem that the angry consumers who have been waiting for 2.1 to come along have been applying plenty of external pressure. It is, after all an incremental increase, not a completely new version (i.e not a 3.0, if you will).
What would have helped both companies is if they just posted the update when it was ready, and not made such a big deal out of it. Of course, the "big deal" that is being made over this is coming from within the community of users who are devoted to their device (I count myself as part of this group). My sister and her husband have Droids, as does one of the parents at school, when I told them to expect an update, they had no idea one was coming. Now, I am not disparaging them in any way, it's just the casual user, so to speak, is probably not aware of the update, and won't be until they get the prompt on their phone. I firmly believe that there are tens of thousands of Droid users out there who are going to be calling VZW customer service asking what the update is about, and if it's safe to download, once they see the prompt on their phone.
Lessons will be learned (hopefully) from this debacle, so that the next time there is an update for the Droid, things will run smoother.
I am irritated with this, but not so much so that I am going to change carriers, or phones. I imagine, since this is only a "distribution network" issue, that it will probably be resolved quickly, and we will see the update pushed out sooner than we think. It's not like my phone won't work properly without this update, it works quite well the way it is, and 2.1 is only going to improve things. I could imagine though, that the phone lines at VZW are lit up right now by angry customers. I am sure, VZW like any other company does not like angry customers and will be doing it's level best to resolve this situations along with Motorola, so they can turn those angry customers into happy ones.

Does your phone promise updates then fail to deliver? droid does![]()
Wow there is some good info about the ese53 and it may be why it is delayed. It is long and it really discuss what is going on with the droidmod crew but if you read into it. It points to the reason for the delay..sort of. Its long and I do not want to take the story out of context. read here: DroidMod - Everything Droid doesn't, DroidMod does.
to see if you are getting the same vibe I am getting.

Resistance is futile.

haha wow it was a joke lol im not that concerned
I have to agree. I'm more amused than upset because this reflects on Verizon so badly. This is being made WAY more complicated than it needs to be especially on Verizons side for the most part. There's more than one way to skin this cat and quite honestly distributing the update this way reveals an OLD way of thinking. This should be available via download for advanced users (who care more than the casual user) and OTA should be left for those who aren't particularly pressed about it. This would alleviate the strain on the network anyway. Think Verizon! THINK!
But over all... I'm not to worried because I don't want to be without PDANet for a few weeks anyway.
Other than the fact that these guys decided to make sure they stayed on the right side of the line, and conducted themselves in an honest fashion, I didn't get much out of the article, unless you are referring to the point they referenced about the ESE53 build being stolen from the company by an employee.
I don't want to make assumptions or insinuations about the reported theft of the code having something to do with the delay in getting the update OTA.....
