First. just want to say thanks and acknowledge the effort and time everyone put into this.

Worked flawlessly on my Moto Droid 2.2 FRG01B. Now I have root and WiFi tethering, and it only took 15 minutes.

For the casual tinkerer the instructions may seem confusing at first. Just read through them a couple of times and follow the steps. If you are smart enough to see actual file extensions in a Windows OS, and can rename files, you should be able to accomplish this without any issues.

What's no entirely clear to me now is how to back it up. I may want to try some custom ROM, but need to know I can get the Droid back to where it is today.

    Thanks again,

In SPRecovery there's an option on the main menu for backup/restore. You open that, select "simple nandroid backup", then let it do its thing.

    Exclamation

    Let's see here ...

    I wrote sbf_flash.

    -- 1 --

The instructions for using sbf_flash are vague and missing a few key steps. This is intentional; I'd rather have people complain that sbf_flash didn't do anything than to have them claim that sbf_flash broke their phone.

This is nothing more than to protect my sanity. Basically, I have no interest in the people looking for a 1-click exploit; the android community already has those in abundance and supporting them is a rather pointless and thankless job. What I look for are the people who genuinely need help.

    -- 2 --

The original sprecovery sbf contains a kernel. Why? After downloading an OTA update, the phone will reboot into recovery to apply the update, this update is not allowed to replace recovery because if it somehow failed the phone wouldn't boot. Instead, there's a script called "install-recovery.sh" which runs on the next bootup (and technically all bootups after) which takes the normal boot kernel, applies a patch and writes it to recovery. To avoid that, a "custom" kernel was used; exact same as the original but with a few bytes changed -- the upshot of which is that after flashing the sbf file no further modifications are needed.

The side effect of this is that people following old outdated howtos end up flashing an old kernel; somewhat harmless .. the phone will still boot, but because the kernel and wifi modules are separate, the wifi module will no longer load, complaining of a kernel mismatch.

    -- 3 --

So sbf_flash is a linux program, why isn't it open source? Wouldn't it be great if everyone could make sbf files?

As is, (and with few exception) the only sbf files in existence are the ones created by Motorola and are essentially perfectly safe. A malformed sbf file could write literally anywhere on the flash and do serious damage. The sprecovery and clockwork nandroid formats are rather tame by comparison, the worst you can do with them is cause a boot loop. Honestly I think having two custom rom formats is enough hassle without introducing a third.

That said, while sbf_flash won't let you create sbf_files, it will let you do the next best thing; the -r switches allow sbf_flash to flash only portions of an sbf file, or to flash arbitrary files directly to the phone, essentially acting like the fastboot utility used on other android devices.

Getting back to the question of sbf_flash source itself, I've been asked many times to release it but nobody has really come up with a compelling reason why I should. If there's a bug that needs to be fixed or a feature that needs to be added I'll happily do it, but at this point I consider work on sbf_flash to be completed.

I really don't bother with the forums much (too many of them, and most of them absolutely a mess) so chances are I won't see any replies to this thread, or even private messages. If you actually need to get a hold of me, use an IRC client, I won't say where but I'm not that hard to find.

Open source (FOSS) under an approved license allows integrating, incorporating, supporting, and amending. Having no source allows nothing other than using, which is a great last resort and nothing else.

There are hundreds of millions of FOSS developers. There are hundreds of thousands who might improve your code. Right now there is only one who can. One is less than hundreds of thousands.

If there's a bug that needs to be fixed or a feature that needs to be added I'll happily do it, but at this point I consider work on sbf_flash to be completed.
Did I say "One"? I should now say "Zero". Zero people who will work on this.

Congratulations on writing the world's first "perfect" software. I've used it twice. I have it on my USB stick. Don't worry, I won't do that again.

Those pesky forums where other people have things to say are so horrible. Imagine that, other people expecting you to pay attention to those pesky things they bothered to write. Probably some of them even had helpful details...

It's ok, your documentation is great. You've released a tool but you won't even put the one page manual with it. You have great excuses! It's worthy of someone who can handle IRC. Everything you want to say is great. After all, you wrote one piece of code to which you won't release the source. WooHoo get out the cake and candles!

Nobody wants to "get a hold of you". Nobody will be "looking for you" on IRC. LOL.

    Have a h4x0r d4y.*

hehehe, I'm beginning to think that gavron is not much more than a troll. gavron makes extensive quoting type posts (as above) where gavron breaks down a post into little pieces trying to get the posters goat and/or belittle said poster. gavron also posts some infinite and intellegent info that gavron finds on the internet, but what does gavron really have to contribute? As in some of gavron's own in-depth information, guides, links, file folder, compiliation or ? However when gavron's post is answered with a firm rebuttal, gavron is silent.

Case in point, look to this thread here starting at post 22:

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dro...tml#post712066

You will see that gavron made a similar multi break down quoted post (an attack or am I wrong?) however when sufficient evidence is posted to rebut gavron's post, you can clearly see that gavron is silent by reading the rest of the thread.

On another note, I am glad for ALL the contibutions that mbm and MotoCache1 has made. I used HoTTproxy back in the day, and MotoCache1 is old school so expect his posts to be long and very detailed. If'n ya don't read allof'em, then it's your own fault, lol
