Well it seems it did not go so smoothly. I waited till rsd lite had phone[0000]: phone is being rebooted. I instantly pressed dpad up. Rsd lite says finished and the droid is back on the screen that says
Bootloader
2C.7C
battery ok
ok to program
Transfer mode:
USB
The instructions seem to suggest that recovery will start but it does not seem to be doing anything just still at the above screen. Should I be rebooting the phone now
So now what?

yes reboot again holding 'x' - going into the bootloader again just allows rsdlite to finish its test to show "pass"

The only dumb question is the one not asked.

Why would you unroot? This method fixes everything and will allow you to continue to use ROM Manager until it borks something bigtime.
Just use this method, then flash ClockworkMOD Recovery over SPRecovery, and away you go.

Because the thread starts out like this>>>This procedure is to root a phone that is not presently rooted. If you're already rooted (by virtue of running a custom ROM or any other way) then you don't need this.
SO..I can do this method EVENTHOUGH I am already rooted with universal androot and it won't screw anything up?

Ok looks like I am rooted
I guess their was one slightly confusing step for me.
12.
in step 11 it seemed to suggest to skip step 12 if you caught the boot?
Thanks,
Josh

NO! Read your post (quoted above) again in its entirety. You've even spelled it out for yourself!
1) This method (the original post/this whole thread) is NOT NEEDED for Droids that are already rooted.
2) You state that you are already rooted! You don't need to do anything from this thread!!!
3) This thread provides instructions on how to root a non-rooted Droid... in other words, the goal of this method/thread is to basically do what you've already done with Universal Androot... it's just another way to do it.
I hope this helps clarify it for you?!

The only reason you'd need to do this if you're already rooted is to put a custom recovery image on a phone with bootloader 2C. 7C.
It is safe to do so if you are rooted, however, as this is the ONLY way to get a custom recovery image on a phone with that bootloader. Once you have SPRecovery on you can then flash ClockworkMOD Recovery via ROM Manager if you wish to work with ROM Manager.

Thanks for the link Furbearing I downloaded the file and was able to restore my phone back to stock 2.2. Had a little scare after I installed the zip file and rebooted the phone. Phone got stuck at the red eye screen forever. Had to pull the battery. Placed the battery back in and booted to the stock recovery.
I wiped data/factory reset and wiped cache. rebooted phone again and it came back up fully stock like i just got it out of the box. Guess i should have wiped data and cache after the install of the zip file and before the reboot. But thanks again. Now I hope my nandroid backup works.

thanks.
Yes, THERE ARE downsides to using one of the one-click apps. However, since you're using an LG Dare, are you sure it's running Android? If not, "rooting" may not be an option to you. If it is, you may be stuck running one or using ADB.
Sorry, I currently have the dare but plan on getting the X soon
What are the downsides of the one click root? I am very curious for anyone to say, thanks !

Why are all the w's in your post links to the android-wifi-tether page?
the W on my keyboard was not working so I copied a w from somewhere and pasted it everytime i wanted to type a W, that W just must have linked to that page. My apologies. In other news I fixed the W key
