Enable always-on mobile data

So I did a test today and noticed a few things.

First, disabling this setting does disable push e-mail. After 10 minutes at idle (screen blank), I sent an email to my gmail account, and where the message would usually show up 10-20 seconds later on my phone with it enabled, it didn't show up until I woke of the phone after 5 minutes of waiting.

Another thing I wanted to test was Google Talk. When I get home from work I'll try it out, but I suspect that it will disconnect you after a certain amount of time with the phone on idle.

However, programs that have a scheduled update time still update at those time intervals (weather for instance).

Sounds about right.. My AIM gets disconnected after a while if i leave it enabled. I think i will have to just live with the fact that battery life sucks until the larger extended battery comes out.

so if one doesn't care about messengers or push email, disabling that could really help battery life couldn't it?

Yes, people have been reporting greatly increased battery life from unchecking that setting.

I like getting my emails and IM's immediately. It's kind of why I bought a smartphone in the first place.

good point...

though i'm in a situation where i go probably 3 or 4 hours at a time (plus at night obviously) without needing immediate access to that on my phone, so i might give it a go and see how much of an inconvenience it creates

If that's the case you should just add the Power Control widget to one of your home screens and toggle off the data connection during those time periods. Easier than navigating into that setting.

the stock power control widget doesn't have data does it? all i see is wifi, bluetooth, gps, sync(?), and brightness

i know there are other widgets out there, though - i'll go take a look

i wouldn't think so, but doing this doesn't affect making/receiving phone calls right?

I could be wrong but I assumed if you turn off the background sync you are effictively turning off data as it won't search for any new emails or updates for widgets, etc unless you actually open the particular app.

I have this feature off and my gmail still comes through about 30 seconds after i send it. and im pretty sure that I been getting gchat with this feature off. Need to run a complete test
