I too was able to solve this frustrating problem (after deleting many apps to no avail), by going to manage apps and clearing all data from the facebook app. This cleared the low storage space icon and immediately allowed the gmail account to sync. Thank you for that suggestion.

After months of doing the same temporary fixes as everyone else here has mentioned (clearing app data, refusing the flash update, installing the hotfix - which always worked, especially after restarting) over and over again I gave up and did a factory reset. It was easier than expected, and I didn't run into any glitches. As another poster suggested, I now use K9 Mail in place of the native Mail app (since he heard from HTC that it was the app that wasn't cleaning up after itself). I assume that things will start to fill up again in about a year, by which time I may have already switched to an iPhone.
