Noob Questions

Well, I have rooted my incredible, mostly just because I was bored one day. Now, for something more fun, like flashing ROMs and whatnot...

My basic question is, why do I have to totally erase my memory in order to put on most ROMs? I really don't like the thought of having to back up all of my apps and HOPE it works.

Are there any ROMs that don't require that? I'm basically looking for something fun to play with since I went though the trouble of rooting the phone. The only thing I've really gotten out of it so far is an app that takes screen shots :P

There is an app that does sync your app data to your Gmail. It does not save the apps only sync them. It allows you to reinstall them. The reason you wipe is because people encountered alot of problems when they didn't wipe. You can always make a back up and flash with out wiping but it can easily go wrong.
