New to roms. Looking for some info.

Hey Droid forum world. Just got my Droid incredible about a month ago and have been reading a few threads on here trying to get into the customizing of the phone. First of all I love this phone but I'm just trying to get it more customized like I've seen in some screen shots on some other threads.

Can somebody just help me out and explain kind of what is a rom and kernal. I hate being so in lack of knowledge about anything but I also didn't know what 2+2 was before I learned math lol. Anyway, my buddy helped me root the phone for the free tethering but I was hoping somebody can just give me like a beginners run down of Watever you think will help get me started. Thanks.

    Droid Incredible.

Titanium backs up the apps and Rom Manager uses clockwork which backs up the entire contents of the phone.
