No Joystick--ClockworkMod

I have the unfortunate situation where my optical joystick and center button are no longer functional. Taking back to Verizon is a last resort as I obtained the phone used and have not unrooted and cleaned for warranty work. Surprisingly, I don't need and probably wouldnt even use the joystick or center button except in ClockworkMod where its necessary to "select" an option. My volume keys can move me up and down, but can't select without pushing the center button. I have tried everything (I think). I'm not a noob but probably know just enough to be dangerous. I tried loading an Alternative recovery like Amon Ra and even found one where he offers "altkeys," which I think are intended to help people in my situation b/c the power key works like the center button, but, no matter how many ways or tries I make, I can't get it to flash. I understand there may be way to send keystrokes through adb. I even heard the keystroke for the joystick is 272. I will be forever in debt to anyone with a solution other than me ordering a new part and installing it--because probably not competent to go there. Thanks.
